Audubon Nature Sanctuary

The Columbia Audubon Society (CAS) is an organization of local people who share the goal to conserve the habitats of wildlife.  CAS hosts many field trips for people interested in birdwatching so members can have a space to learn about different species and steps to protect them. Additionally, CAS manages three nature areas in Columbia and Boone County: Columbia Audubon Nature Sanctuary, Wild Haven Nature Area, and Albert Children’s Wildlife Area. These sites total more than 200 acres and are open to the public for nature study, walking the trails, and birdwatching. To help educate people on nature, CAS helps organize Columbia Public Schools field trips to its nature sites and classroom bird feeder watch programs. These initiatives are intended to help younger generations recognize the importance and beauty of nature. CAS also finds it imperative to document bird sightings to help national researchers monitor the status and whereabouts of bird populations. To accomplish this, members participate in three national bird counts each year. Columbia Audubon Society is doing its part to preserve Missouri native plant species, bird populations, habitats, and beauty in Missouri while educating the public on what they can do to help.
